Design Science Research is a powerful paradigm enabling researchers to make important contributions to society and industry. Simply stated, the goal of DSR is to generate knowledge on how to find innovative solutions to important problems in the form of models, methods, constructs and instantiations. Over the past 20 years, the design science research (DSR) paradigm has developed into an established paradigm in Information Systems Research and it is of strong uptake in many other disciplines, including Management Science and Computer Science.
This book provides a collection of twelve DSR cases, presented by experienced researchers in the field. It offers readers access to real-world DSR studies, together with the authors' reflections on their research processes. These cases will support researchers who want to engage in DSR, and represent a valuable addition to existing introductions to DSR methods and processes. Readers will learn from the hands-on experiences of respected experts who have conducted extensive DSR in a range of application contexts.Alan R. Hevner is a Distinguished University Professor and Eminent Scholar in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department in the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida. He also holds the Citigroup/Hidden River Chair of Distributed Technology. Hevner's areas of research interest include design-science research, information-systems development, software engineering, distributed-database systems, healthcare systems and Internet of Things computing. He has published more than 200 research papers on these topics and has consulted for a number of Fortune 500 companies. Hevner received doctorate in computer science from Purdue University and has held faculty positions at the University of Maryland and the University of Minnesota. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a
Alexander Maedche is full professor at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. He is head of the research group "Information Systems & Service Design" at the Institute of Information Systems and Marketing (IISM) and director at the Karlsruhe Service Research Institute (KSRI). Alexander Maedche received a Diploma in industrial engineering and management and a PhD in applied computer science from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. After his PostDoc research in computer science, he worked in industry at Bosch group and SAP SE in managerial positions in the fields of IT management and software product development for several years. He is a former Chair of Information Systems and managing director of the Institute of Enterprise Systems (InES) at the University of Mannheim, Germany. His research work focuses on designing interactive intelligent systems as well as the IS engineering and transformation lifecycle. His work has been published in leading international IS and CS journals such as the Journal of the Association of Information Systems (JAIS), Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE), Information & Software Technology (IST), Computers & Human Behavior (CHB), IEEE Intelligent Systems, VLDB Journal, and AI Magazine.
