Contested Climate Justice - Challenged Democracy (PDF)

The global climate crisis öers potential for far-reaching individual and collective insecurities. It increases the risk of growing social polarization. In the Western industrialized nations - the »global North« - the demand for relief strategies to defend responsibility and consumption and living conditions is increasing, while the societies of the »global South« are ¿ghting against structural dependency, for equal (wealth) participation, for the preservation of resources and livelihoods, for survival.
This international anthology is dedicated to the discourses, agitations and dynamics that have prevented, delayed, and slowed down, or even reversed, necessary transformation steps in global climate protection to this day. The book brings together contributions by authors from 15 countries. It pays special attention to the interplay between climate protection policy, climate justice and democratic cohesion. The interdisciplinary and international perspective should make it possible to illuminate and compare the climate protection-regressive, anti-democratic and even (far) right-wing policies of Western industrialized nations - embedded in their respective social contexts - and to contextualize them regarding the historical conditions of their emergence and global inequality regimes. What is the situation in di¿erent countries with regard to the social connectivity of the above- mentioned positions and policies, taking into account the di¿erences and commonalities of historical, social and political preconditions?

Der Band versammelt wissenschaftliche Perspektiven aus dem globalen Süden und dem globalen Norden auf die globale Klimakrise als wohl grösste aktuelle Herausforderung für die demokratische Entwicklung und den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt innerhalb und zwischen den Gesellschaften weltweit. Er zeigt: Die Klimakrise trifft alle Gesellschaften, aber nicht alle gleich. Unter den Folgen des Klimawandels leiden die Länder des globalen Südens am stärksten. Die historisch gewachsenen und fortbestehenden Strukturen globaler Ungleichheit rücken im Zuge der eskalierenden Klimakrise ins Zentrum der Debatten um globalen Klimaschutz. Im globalen Norden macht sich die Angst vor Wohlstandsverlusten breit. Damit einher geht ein Erstarken der radikalen Rechten, die mit falschen Versprechen Statusverlustängste mobilisiert und die demokratischen Gesellschaften und den globalen Klimaschutz vor eine Zerreissprobe stellt. Der Band zeigt internationale multidisziplinäre Perspektiven auf die Folgen der ungleichen Produktion und Verteilung des fossilen Wohlstands, die damit verbundenen Ressourcen- und Machtverteilungskonflikte und die Mechanismen ihrer Rechtfertigung. Die Beiträge stammen von Forscher:innen unter anderem aus Südafrika, Brasilien, Chile, Türkei, Indien, Japan, USA und europäischen Ländern.
