Secure your computer network with SSH! With transparent, strong encryption, reliable public-key authentication, and a highly configurable client/server architecture, SSH (Secure Shell) is a popular, robust, TCP/IP-based solution to many network security and privacy concerns. It supports secure remote logins, secure file transfer between computers, and a unique "tunneling" capability that adds encryption to otherwise insecure network applications. Best of all, SSH is free, with feature-filled commercial versions available as well.
SSH: The Secure Shell: The Definitive Guide covers the Secure Shell in detail for both system administrators and end users. It demystifies the SSH man pages and includes thorough coverage of:
- SSH1, SSH2, OpenSSH, and F-Secure SSH for Unix, plus Windows and Macintosh products: the basics, the internals, and complex applications.
- Configuring SSH servers and clients, both system-wide and per user, with recommended settings to maximize security.
- Advanced key management using agents, agent forwarding, and forced commands.
- Forwarding (tunneling) of TCP and X11 applications in depth, even in the presence of firewalls and network address translation (NAT).
- Undocumented behaviors of popular SSH implementations.
- Installing and maintaining SSH systems.
Whether you're communicating on a small LAN or across the Internet, SSH can ship your data from "here" to "there" efficiently and securely. So throw away those insecure .rhosts and hosts.equiv files, move up to SSH, and make your network a safe place to live and work.demystifies the SSH man pages and includes thorough coverage of:

Are you serious about network security? Then check out SSH, the Secure Shell, which provides key-based authentication and transparent encryption for your network connections. It's reliable, robust, and reasonably easy to use, and both free and commercial implementations are widely available for most operating systems. While it doesn't solve every privacy and security problem, SSH eliminates several of them very effectively.Everything you want to know about SSH is in our second edition of SSH, The Secure Shell: The Definitive Guide. This updated book thoroughly covers the latest SSH-2 protocol for system administrators and end users interested in using this increasingly popular TCP/IP-based solution.
How does it work? Whenever data is sent to the network, SSH automatically encrypts it. When data reaches its intended recipient, SSH decrypts it. The result is "transparent" encryption-users can work normally, unaware that their communications are already encrypted. SSH supports secure file transfer between computers, secure remote logins, and a unique "tunneling" capability that adds encryption to otherwise insecure network applications. With SSH, users can freely navigate the Internet, and system administrators can secure their networks or perform remote administration.
Written for a wide, technical audience, SSH, The Secure Shell: The Definitive Guide covers several implementations of SSH for different operating systems and computing environments. Whether you're an individual running Linux machines at home, a corporate network administrator with thousands of users, or a PC/Mac owner who just wants a secure way to telnet or transfer files between machines, our indispensable guide has you covered. It starts with simple installation and use of SSH, and works its way to in-depth case studies on large, sensitive computer networks.
No matter where or how you're shipping information, SSH, The Secure Shell: The Definitive Guide will show you how to do it securely.

Rezension zu „SSH, The Secure Shell, English edition “
"Still the best SSH book out there by a long shot, but too much on Tectia and not enough on OpenSSH 4." - Paul Hudson, Linux Format, October 2005 "The authors manage to convey what SSH is all about as a concept and how to use it in the real world with equal aplomb, and highly technical configuration details are explained with clarity. They are happy to related how to integrate SSH into non-Unix clients, which makes a pleasant change from the typical Unix gurus who write books such as this. Whenever with see the words "definitive guide' included in the title of a book, we usually prepare ourselves for something far from it. The exception being when O'Reilly are the publishers, and this SSH guide is certainly as definitive as any you are likely to read. And read it you should if you are seriously involved with network security." Davey Winder, PC Plus, November 2005
