Produktinformationen zu „Commentaries on Early Jewish Literature / Testament of Abraham “
The series Commentaries on Early Jewish Literature (CEJL) is devoted to the study of Jewish documents and traditions that can be dated or traced back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods (ca. 300 BCE 150 CE). The literature covered by the series represents a rich diversity of literary forms and religious perspectives. Formally, these writings include testaments, apocalypses, legends, expansions and interpretations of biblical writings, psalms and prayers, poetry, historiography, and wisdom literature. They witness to an immensely creative period during which many Jews were struggling to preserve a living faith in the wake of social, political, and religious upheavals in the Mediterranean world and the Near East.

This first verse-by-verse commentary on the Greek text of the Testament of Abraham places the work within the history of both Jewish and Christian literature. It emphasizes the literary artistry and comedic nature of the Testament, brings to the task of interpretation a mass of comparative material, and establishes that, although the Testament goes back to a Jewish tale of the first or second century CE, the Christian elements are much more extensive than has previously been realized. The commentary further highlights the dependence of the Testament upon both Greco-Roman mythology and the Jewish Bible. This should be the standard commentary for years to come.

Rezension zu „Commentaries on Early Jewish Literature / Testament of Abraham “
Le commentaire de Dale Allison permettra à ceux qui veulent l'étudier d'en saisir toute la richesse et l'interêt."Recherches des Sciences Religieuses 4/2005 "It is an important work for understanding first century CE (and later) Judaism. [...] It is my hope that this work will not only appear on the shelves of any responsible theological library but also that biblical scholars and pastors [...] will add it to their own personal libraries."Peter H. Davids in: Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 1/2005
