Produktinformationen zu „Unbroken (ePub)“
Alexis Quinn has always known she was different. Academically and athletically gifted, she soared through her years in education but failed to socialise adequately with her peers. Somehow, social norms just passed her by. But her difference had always been her strength, until the birth of her child and the death of her brother, Josh; then her difference became her downfall. Unable to deal with the reality of what happened with Josh, Alexis was detained under the mental health act against her will. She found herself struggling for years, with diagnosis after diagnosis landing on her shoulders. Told repeatedly by doctors that she was dangerous, Alexis tried to become the person the system wanted her to be: someone normal. But it seemed that normal was always just out of reach. As time went by, she realised that the care she thought was going to help her might just be the very thing that would destroy her. Raw and honest, Unbroken tells the story of a strong woman learning how to live beyond diagnosis.
Autoren-Porträt von Alexis Quinn
A school teacher of over ten years, former professional athlete and now Manager of the Restraint Reduction Network.Activists all have a story or defining moment that propelled us into action. Alexis Quinn's began with a crisis after she birthed her first child. It ended with a triumph over stigma, marginalisation, human rights abuses and a daring escape to Africa! As a result of this experience, Alexis penned her ground-breaking memoir, Unbroken. This book enabled opportunities to discuss autism, human rights and neurodiverse culture.
When Alexis conceived her second child, she reasoned that autistic people should not have to enter pregnancy and birth worrying about being misunderstood, marginalised and traumatised.
She set about connecting with other autistic parents and once again saddened at the scarce resources for autistic people. Once again, she found herself acknowledging the collective struggle of autistics. Determined not to repeat the past Alexis took matters into her own hands. Assuming a human rights approach to her second pregnancy, she succeeded in having an entirely uneventful, and perfect birth experience.
Autistic and Expecting was then born. A book written by autistic people for autistic people. It advocated for birthing babies autistically and kindles a sense of empowerment where self-doubt might exist. Parents will have the chance to share and read about our collective, beautiful and rich culture. To learn and explore tips, narrative and strategies to realise their birthing and parenting goals. Above all it recognises that we are best placed to tell our stories.
