Anderson wrote and directed his own play as part of the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh's 2005 Festival programme, for which he won the Arches Award for Stage Directors.
Adaptations include Zorro (Visible Fictions and Traverse Theatre). Co-writing/directing credits include Mixter Maxter (National Theatre of Scotland and St Magnus Festival, Orkney). Other directing credits include Rocketville (Òran Mór). As Associate Director: Home (National Theatre of Scotland) and Architecting (The TEAM and National Theatre of Scotland). His work as musical director/composer includes Peter Pan (National Theatre of Scotland and Barbican), Be Near Me (National Theatre of Scotland and Donmar Warehouse); Oresteia (Lazzi Experimental Arts Unit & Cumbernauld Theatre) and Black Watch (National Theatre of Scotland, nominated Best Use of Music, Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland). He was Director-in-Residence with the National Theatre of Scotland 2006-07 and as an Associate Playwright with the Playwrights' Studio Scotland 2010-11
