John L. Ransom (18431919) joined the Union Army in 1862 and served as Quartermaster of Company A, 9th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. The following year he was captured in Tennessee and was interned at the infamous Georgia prison camp, Andersonville, from which he eventually escaped.
