I hope it inspires you on your journey, brings you peace and joy and reaffirms your belief that Newfoundlanders are often resilient, kind and full of hope, not only after hard times but during them. It's these hard times that make Newfoundlanders and Labradorians salt of the earth.

Ultimately, I think about how everything I create will impact my son, Benjamin. Writing this will hopefully paint a picture of my foundation as a mom and how I strive to provide the most loving place for him to grow up in.

Ben, Newfoundland can be rough and raw, but it makes us resilient and ready to stand up when life seems impossible. These are your roots and where you come from. Always be proud of who you are and the strength that you carry.

Vicki Merrigan-Schofield is an author and illustrator born in Gander, Newfoundland. Her love for travel took her from Newfoundland to the UK, to Ontario, and now to Nova Scotia, where she studied art, creative writing, and business at a university level, obtaining her Business Degree from Memorial University. She has had pieces of nonfiction, fiction, and children's writing published internationally, but this is her first compilation of poetry. When not writing, Vicki can be found making something creative, whether fibre arts or fine arts, and takes pride in being a joyful, inclusive and kind educator. She loves working with children and helping them to find their creative voice. Her East Coast family includes her husband Andy, son Benjamin, cat Pumpkin and dog Marty.
