Trauma, trauma-related disorders, substance use, and addictive disorders often co-occur, and frequently play a role in the problems and issues that social workers contend with in their practice with individuals, families, and communities. Research shows that there is a relationship between trauma-related symptoms and problematic use of substances and other addictive behaviors. This book examines various types of trauma amongst various populations and settings, and explores the challenges in delivering trauma services in outpatient addiction treatment settings. It was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions.
Shelly A. Wiechelt is Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USA. She specializes in research and practice on trauma and addiction. She is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Substance Use & Misuse.
Shulamith Lala Ashenberg Straussner is Professor and Chair of the Practice Area and Director of the Post-Master's Certificate Program in the Addictions at the Silver School of Social Work, New York University, USA. She is the founding editor of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions.
