I like to ask couples where they met each other. It is a magical moment when two strangers became interested in each other before they were friends, lovers, and family. When I was old enough to ask my mom, she said she had never met my father before they married. I started to find out how they met and it started when my mom went to Xinjiang when she was 17.
In 1965, 1100 teenagers between 16 and 19 years old left Nanjing and travelled 7 days on train westward 4000 kilometers to Xinjiang. They lived in shelters half buried under the desert and worked long hours to clear bushes and level ground. Gradually, the city teenagers transformed the undesirable land into farmland.
My mom had to go through this unbelievable coming-of-age on the desert to make acquaintance with her future husband. They both had no other choice except marrying each other. I would like to share this story of my parents with you. It is pieced together with stories told in the family, recollections from friends of my mom, and a little imagination of Xinjiang.
I started to write letters home every week after I left China. I told them everything that intereted or moved me. This is how I write.
