Yuchuei H. An, M.D. is Associate Professor and Co-director of the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Bioengineering, Department of Bioengineering, Clemson University, Clemson, Sc. Dr. An graduated from the Harbin Medical University, Harbin, China, in 1983 and was trained in orthopaedic surgery at ii Shui Tan Hospital (residency), Beijing, China, and in hand surgery at Sydney Hospital (Clinical Fellow), Sydney, Australia. In 1991, Dr. An joined with Dr. Richard J. Friedman in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina to establish an Orthopaedic Research Laboratory. Since then, he has been directing and supervising graduate students, research fellows, and residents on numerous orthopaedic research projects, Dr. An has published more than 50 scientific papers and book chapters and presented more than 60 research abstracts. He is an active member of six academic societies, including the Orthopaedic Research Society (USA), Society for Biomaterials (USA), American Society of Biomechanics, and Tissue Engineering Society (USA). Dr. An's current research interests include repair of bone and cartilage defects using tissue engineering techniques, improving bone or soft tissue ingrowth to implant surfaces, prevention of bacterial adhesion and prosthetic infection, and development of animal models for orthopacdic applications. He enjoys art and created most of the drawings used in his chapters. Richard J. Friedman, M.D., FRCS(C), is Professor and Director of the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, and Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering.
