Auguste Comte, born Isidore Auguste Marie François Xavier Comte on January 19, 1798, in Montpellier, France, was a pioneering figure in the field of sociology and philosophy. Known as the father of positivism, Comte introduced a new discipline based on the application of scientific methods to the study of society, which he believed would lead to the improvement of humanity through knowledge and reason.
