This book deals with relevant aspects of language against the contemporary ideal of open, pluralistic societies, as well as with consequences on language of increasingly complex and diverse power relations, migration, globalization, and modern phenomena such as ICT.

Although linguistic plurality and power relations between languages (and their speakers) are changing constantly and at high speed as a result of global migration and democratization processes, the general understanding of languages - at least in Europe - still reflects hierarchies and classifications that are based on the 19th century-based nation-state ideology. However, status differences between languages and the associated power structures cannot be described using 19th century concepts and terminology. Such an understanding would negate all socio-political and socio-cultural developments of the last decades. In recent decades, globalization, increased mobility, transnational networking, and innovative communication technologies have created new forms of language use, more complex and diverse power relations and generally diverse perspectives regarding language. This book deals with relevant aspects regarding the status dimensions of language against the background of the ideal of an open, pluralistic society. These are the key points:- Changes in the linguistic landscape in the course of/as a result of migration and globalization
- Role and status of languages in pluralistic societies
- The relationship between native languages, diaspora languages, migrant languages, and majority languages

Agnes Grond (1972), Mag. Dr. phil. Universitätsassistent am Institut für Translationswissenschaft, Forschungseinheit Übersetzung-Migration-Minderheiten, Universität Graz. Ihre Forschung zu kurdischen Diasporasprachen in Österreich stützt sich auf die Konzepte der kritischen Soziolinguistik mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf neuen methodischen Ansätzen und der Entwicklung eines praktischen Rahmens für ein breiteres Verständnis der Beziehung zwischen Umwelteinflüssen, Sprachpolitik und Sprachideologien auf den Sprachgebrauch in der mehrsprachigen Kommunikation.Angelika Heiling (1983), Mag.phil. Ihren MA erlangte sie in den Bereichen Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Gender Studies an der Universität Graz und der University of Aberdeen. Derzeit ist sie in der Forschungseinheit Plurilingualismus beschäftigt und promoviert mit einem Thema über lokale und translokale Stimmen in Literatur und Filmen des südlichen Afrikas. Ihre Hauptforschungsinteressen liegen in der kritischen Soziolinguistik und Literatur mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Mehrsprachigkeit des südlichen Afrikas, städtischer Mehrsprachigkeit sowie Migranten- und Diasporakontexten.
Oana Hergenröther (1987), Dr. MA. Projektassistentin mit Doktorat an der Universität Graz am Forschungsbereich Plurilingualismus und am Institut für Slavistik der Universität Graz. Sie schloss ihr Studium der Anglistik und Amerikanistik an der Universität Novi Sad, Serbien, ab und erlangte ihren Doktorgrad mit einer Arbeit über die Romane und Filme des zeitgenössischen amerikanischen Autors Paul Auster, wobei sie ihre spätere Monographie auf ihrer Doktorarbeit basierte. Seit 2015 arbeitet sie an der Universität Graz und erforscht ihre Hauptinteressen: Literaturen in mehrsprachigen und Minderheitenkontexten mit Schwerpunkt auf Südosteuropa; Age/Aging Studies, sowie zeitgenössische amerikanische Literatur und Kultur. Sie ist ausserdem aktive Literaturübersetzerin zwischen Serbisch, Rumänisch, Englisch und Spanisch.

(1971), Mag. Dr. phil. Seit 2007 Leiterin von treffpunkt sprachen - Zentrum für Sprache, Plurilingualismus und Fachdidaktik der Universität Graz - und verantwortlich für die universitäre Verankerung und Absicherung sowie die strategische Weiterentwicklung von Lehre und Forschung. Sie studierte Deutsch und Latein auf Lehramt an der Universität Graz und absolvierte weitere universitäre Weiterbildungen in den Bereichen Deutsch als Fremdsprache und Medienkunde. Ihr Doktoratsstudium schloss sie am Institut für Germanistik in Graz mit einer Dissertation in Älterer Deutscher Literatur ab. Von 2010 bis 2015 war sie Direktorin des Konfuzius-Instituts der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Bildungs- und Lehrmanagement, Personal- und Organisationsentwicklung, Sprachlehr- und -lernforschung.
