Maurits Cornelis Escher wurde am 17. Juni 1898 in Leeuwarden geboren. Auf der Oberschule in Arnheim erhielt er einen ausgezeichneten Zeichenunterricht bei F. W. van der Haagen, der ihn auch im Linolschnitt unterwies und dadurch Eschers graphische Veranlagung ganz wesentlich förderte. Von 1919 bis 1922 besuchte er die Schule für Architektur und künstlerische Ornamentik in Haarlem, wo S. Jessurun de Mesquita sein Lehrer in den freien graphischen Techniken war. Mesquitas starke Persönlichkeit hat ebenfalls grossen Einfluss auf Eschers weitere Entwicklung zum Graphiker ausgeübt. 1922 zog er nach Italien und liess sich 1924 in Rom nieder. Während der zehn Jahre seines dortigen Aufenthalts machte er viele Studienreisen. 1934 verliess er Italien, blieb nacheinander zwei Jahre in der Schweiz und fünf Jahre in Brüssel und wohnte seit 1941 in Baarn in Holland, wo er am 27. März 1972 im Alter von 73 Jahren starb.
