Martha Cooper has a reputation of being the first and foremost photographer of emerging Hip Hop culture in New York City. This book documents the beginning of the phenomenon now known as Hip Hop. Along with the photos are quotes and statements from the people appearing in them. From 1999 to 2003, Akim Walta tracked down the subjects and conducted numerous interviews obtaining insightful quotes and statements. Other members of the early Hip Hop scene, including Zephyr, Charlie Ahearn, Fabel and Patti Astor have contributed fresh essays to this growing body of Hip Hop history.

Martha Cooper ist freie Fotojournalistin und seit über 25 Jahren auf urbane Strassenkunst und Architektur spezialisiert. Ihre Fotos wurden weltweit veröffentlicht und ausgestellt. 1966 erhielt sie ihr Diplom in Ethnologie in Oxford, England und kehrte 1967 in die Vereinigten Staaten zurück, um am Smithsonian Institut in Washington D.C. zu arbeiten, bevor sie eine Kuratoren-Assistenzstelle am Museum der Universität in Yale antrat. Sie arbeitete drei Jahre als Fotografin bei der NewYork Post, gab diese Anstellung aber 1980 auf, um mehr Zeit zu haben für die Fotografie von U-Bahn Graffiti und Breaking. Martha Cooper ist Fotodirektorin bei City Lore, dem New Yorker Zentrum für urbane Volkskunst. Sie lebt und arbeitet in New York.
