The early years saw an almost complete domination by Lancia, before Toyota became their first proper competitor. In later years, Mitsubishi, Ford and Subaru joined Toyota as key players, each with cars based on four-wheel drive, turbocharged special editions of their mass production vehicles. John Davenport wurde 1939 in Grossbritannien geboren, studierte Mathematik, war Redakteur bei Motoring News und Rallye-Copilot für Grössen wie Vic Elford, Ove Andersson, Sandro Munari, Hannu Mikkola, Markku Alén, Timo Mäkinen, Rauno Aaltonen, bevor er für den Royal Automobile Club und als Chef der Renn- und Rallye-Abteilung von Leyland, später Austin Rover, arbeitete, Stichworte Jaguar XJC und Metro 6R4. Seit 1987 widmet er sich ganz dem Verfassen von Rallye-Büchern, vor allem zusammen mit McKlein.
