This was topped by a worldwide pandemic, which not only cost a lot of money, but also many human lives. Throughout the whole year, Krause wrote letters to his "old" friend Michael in England on a regular basis, where he describes his feelings about his long-standing love for England. His letters are an homage to England, herself part of a union, which has decided to leave her friends in the European Union behind forever. With plaintiveness, Krause realises at the end of the year, that the friendship between the two countries, and especially between their people will never end regardless.

Krause, Christoph T. M Christoph T. M. Krause lebt in Köln. Kurt beichtet seinem Sohn nach langer Krankheit auf dem Sterbebett sein grösstes Lebensgeheimnis. Im Winterfeldzug auf dem Weg nach Russland, war Kurt als 18-Jähriger Wehrmachtsfunker an den Ermordungen ukrainischer Juden beteiligt. In einem abgelegenen ukrainischen Dorf findet er in einem Verschlag den überlebenden, ebenfalls 18-Jährigen Vasili. Die beiden verlieben sich und erleben ihr allererstes Mal. Kurt rettet Vasili daraufhin das Leben, indem er ihm die Flucht nach Schweden ermöglicht. Eine Kette menschlicher Helfer bildet sich und Vasili schafft es tatsächlich, zu überleben. Kurt erhält fälschlicherweise die Nachricht, dass Vasili auf seiner Flucht erschossen worden sei... Ein Coming-of-Age und Coming-Out-Roman über Liebe und Tod im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
