Short duration transactions feature in many scenarios, from fire/burglar alarms and remote monitoring/metering systems to telemetry and Point of Sale (PoS) systems. Many of these networks are based on legacy protocols such as X.25. However, these legacy protocols have been superseded by IP based protocols. Many services are switching to IP, such as voice to Voice over IP (VoIP). Running multiple services over a shared IP infrastructure reduces costs as providers no longer need to maintain and operate a dedicated network that provides only a single service. Thus, transaction networks based on legacy protocols will eventually need to be migrated to operate over IP.This book proposes an IP transaction network based on SIP, secured with TLS. This is followed by a description of the implementation and a performance analysis on its suitability for short duration transactions. The current PoS network in New Zealand is used as a performance and capability benchmark. This research should be useful to professionals in Networking/Telecommunications and Computer Science.
