The purpose of this book is to examine whether the"Movement of movements" has the capacity to uniteinto a larger movement for social change. Despitenine years after the "Battle of Seattle," multipleprotests, conferences, listservs, and World SocialForums (WSFs), this social movement phenomenon ispresently fragmented into many narrowly focusedmovements finding themselves precariously poisedagainst a "common enemy." However, there are manyindications that factions of this Movement ofmovements has some potential transformation capacityinto a higher level of unity greater than what iscurrently experienced based on shared grievances andvalues. This analysis provides a new theory calledthe Relational Empowerment Strategy (RES) that canact as a foundation to facilitate separate movementsto unite for the common good and shift society into amore sustainable paradigm. This book should helpscholar-activists, scholars, and activists reexaminethis movement phenomenon's future.
