But, as he gradually discovers more about his subject's shadowy history, fascination tips over into obsession. And, in entering Dimitrios' criminal underworld, Latimer realizes that his own life may be on the line.

Eric Ambler, geboren 1909 als Sohn eines Schauspieler- und Entertainerpaars in London, studierte Maschinenbau und arbeitete zunächst als Werbetexter. In den dreissiger Jahren schrieb er seine ersten Agentenromane. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg war er Artillerist, dann Produktionsleiter von Lehrfilmen in der britischen Armee; nach 1946 arbeitete er u.a. als Drehbuchautor und Produzent und gewann für drei seiner Bücher den Edgar-Allan-Poe-Preis. Er starb 1998 in London.
